About the Show
This podcast series is a look at crafting objects in a world gone insane. Gary is a veteran furniture maker, designer, and author. These episodes are sometimes practical, often philosophic, and usually irreverent. Gary began his journey by teaching himself how to build furniture after picking up a degree in literature. For 24 years he made custom pieces for individuals and clients around the country. In 1997 he founded The Northwest Woodworking Studio, A School for Woodworkers, in Portland, Oregon. When Covid changed the world, he focused on his podcast and teaching classes online.
He has no illusions about the value of this work in today’s culture of fast and furious and disposable. Making art, building furniture, searching for that Flow state is work that is useless and beautiful, and necessary for those who produce it. Creativity feeds the heart and soul like nothing else can.
